The beach at Katiki Straight is a popular stop for visitors.

The Waitaki District Council is responding to increased visitor pressure along the 6.5km stretch between the Katiki Beach North Reserve rest stop and the Shag Point public toilet at the southern end of the beach by installing a new toilet at the northern rest stop and replacing the Shag Point public toilet, council recreation manager Erik van der Spek says.

The council received $385,000 from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to co-fund a larger package of new or replacement visitor-related infrastructure.

All Day Bay near Kakanui, and Otematata would also receive toilet upgrades and a dumping station at Palmerston was part of the package.

The toilets at Katiki straight were expected to be completed early next month, Mr van der Spek said.
