Kidnap, assault, intent to rob charges

Three Oamaru males will appear in the Dunedin District Court today on serious charges, including kidnapping, following an incident in Oamaru on Friday morning.

The trio, aged 17, 21 and 39, face charges of kidnapping, assault with intent to rob, unlawfully possessing a firearm, threatening to kill/do grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon in circumstances that prima facie showed an intention to use it.

A fourth male, aged 15, also from Oamaru, has been bailed to appear in the Youth Court at a later date.

Police were called to an incident in Oamaru early on Friday and, from that incident, stopped a vehicle at Pukeuri on Saturday night and arrested a 39-year-old man.

Several search warrants were then executed around Oamaru and the other three males were arrested, Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said yesterday.

He could not give further details, as the matter was before the court, but did confirm that nobody was hurt.

The trio will appear before justices of the peace today.

A 27-year-old man will also face charges after a firearm was found at his home.

Police were investigating any link between that firearm and the other incident.

Inquiries were continuing with the possibility of further arrests.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Oamaru police.
