Loan to complete hall

A $50,000 loan from the Waitaki District Council will enable the Weston Progress League to complete the redevelopment of the town's hall.

The council approved the loan on Tuesday after Weston Progress League chairman Derek McGee and member Gary Kircher made a presentation in the public forum before the council meeting.

Already, $475,300 has been spent refurbishing the hall and building an extension, funded by the league and grants.

The extra $50,000 was needed to finish the project - resealing the car park, refurbishing and cleaning the exterior walls of the original hall to match the extension, and augmenting chairs and equipment for functions.

The loan would be repaid from the $34.50 Weston Hall rate levied against properties in the area.

The loan would be for 10 years, but could be repaid in five years with income from hall bookings.

Mr McGee said the rate would not have to be increased to repay the loan.

The Weston Hall was a focal point for the community, used by more than a dozen groups and organisations and rented out for functions.

Since the redevelopment, bookings had been strong, he said.
