A man who has made Oamaru his long-term home is putting his hand up for mayor.

With encumbent Mayor Gary Kircher stepping down at October’s local body elections, Oamaru resident David Wilson has announced he will be a candidate for the Waitaki district mayoralty.

"I’m going to tell voters exactly what I stand for and leave out all the vague platitudes that mean nothing in the end," he said.

Waitaki’s water and wastewater assets must stay under local control, he said.

He supports the Waitaki Property Guardians and their objections to how the proposed district plan treated farmers.

He is a co-founder of the Whitestone Civic Trust.

Although he was born in Dunedin, he said Oamaru was his hometown.

In 2012, he completed a 52-day cycle trip the length of New Zealand on a penny-farthing to promote Oamaru and Waitaki.

He is vice-president of Oamaru Steam and Rail Society, president of Waitaki-Pukeuri Combined Sports Bodies and employed by the Alliance Group in Pukeuri.

Former deputy mayor Mel Tavendale already announced she will run for mayor.
