A Hampden man escaped injury after the car he was driving collided with a train this morning.
Acting Senior Sergeant James Ure, of Dunedin, said the accident happened at a level crossing on Lincoln St, Hampden, about 9.30am.
The driver had stopped at the crossing, which did not have warning lights, but failed to see the train, Snr Sgt Ure said.
It appeared the driver had only checked in one direction before rolling forward and hitting the side of the moving train, he said.
The man's vehicle was extensively damaged, and the train was also damaged, causing diesel to spill on to the track, he said.
The train remained at the scene while diesel was drained from its damaged tanks, and a bumper and other debris from the vehicle was still strewn along the side of the railway line when the Otago Daily Times visited.
