A police spokeswoman said officers responded to reports of the collision at the intersection of Eden and Thames Sts at 4.15pm today.
One person was seriously injured and another had moderate injuries.
The left lane of the north-bound side of the road had to be closed.
The NZ Transport Agency had been contacted for diversions around the State Highway 1 section of the road.
