The Waitaki district has an all-female leadership team after Waitaki’s newly elected first woman mayor Melanie Tavendale chose second-term councillor Rebecca Ryan as her deputy.

Mrs Tavendale announced her deputy mayor would be Cr Ryan, who received the highest vote total for the Oamaru ward in this month’s elections.

Cr Ryan’s appointment was made at the official swearing in of the mayor, councillors and community board members at an inauguration ceremony at the Oamaru Opera House.

She said it was an honour to be given such a vote of confidence by the mayor.

"I love that she’s giving others the opportunity to grow and make their mark, just like she did," Cr Ryan said.

"I was the same age as Mel was when she was first elected to council and, like her, stepping into the deputy mayor role in my second term," Cr Ryan said.

"It’s a huge privilege to serve this community — even more so in this role — and I’ll give it everything.

"I’m very aware I have big shoes to fill but the best growth happens when you’re pushed out of your comfort zone and I’m so grateful for the encouragement and support of former deputy mayor Hana Fanene-Taiti."

Mrs Tavendale said she was pleased to offer the deputy role to Cr Ryan.

"Rebecca is an absolute communications legend. She is also incredibly active in the community, has strong strategic relationships and the elections showed, once again, that she has massive support in the Oamaru ward.

"Listening to Rebecca talk about what she wants to achieve this term absolutely resonates with me.

"We have a fantastic team around the table this term, and I look forward to offering options for each councillor to grow and be actively engaged."

She also recognised the "incredible service and commitment" of former deputy mayor Mata’aga Hana Fanene-Taiti.

"Hana, Waitaki’s first Pasifika councillor and deputy mayor, is one of the most inspirational leaders I have ever worked alongside.

"Hana and her team at Oamaru Pacific Island Community Group have been instrumental in bringing a huge amount of funding and opportunity into Waitaki.

"This term, I want to work alongside her, support her and learn from her in this space.

"So I will be giving her a bit more capacity to do justice to her roles at a national level."
