Waitaki's four mayoral hopefuls are gearing up for the race before the race.

Guy Percival, Mel Tavendale, Kelli Williams and David Wilson will battle it out on the racecourse at the Oamaru Harness Racing Club’s Hannon Memorial Race meeting.

Each will be partnered with a licensed jockey in a dual sulky for a lap around the Oamaru Racecourse.

It will all be for a good cause as well, as the day supports Prostate Cancer Foundation New Zealand’s, ‘Blue September’ campaign.

Ms Tavendale said it was a "a really great cause to get in behind".

"To have our whole election race be used in a real positive way like that is really cool."

Mr Wilson was excited to show support for the club.

"An initiative like the harness racing that’s been round for years, it’s a part of community so I think it’s great to be able to support that sort of thing."

Ms Williams has the most experience with horses as she owns a couple.

"I love horse racing. I’ve got my TAB app on my phone and I also care hugely for horse welfare."

All three agreed it would be a nice change of pace from their usual campaigning.

"When normally everything we do in the whole run up to the election is very serious and it’s very tested and measured, it is good to get out socially," Ms Tavendale said.

Oamaru Harness Racing club president Scott Elliffe said the race will give "first bragging rights" to one candidate.

"Who knows, it might be like the octopus picking the winner of the Football World Cup, it might be an indicator of fortune to come."

The race meeting will be held on September 14.
