A young mother was left fearing for her baby's safety on Saturday afternoon, after she was caught up in an armed hold-up in Oamaru.

Meadowbank Dairy owner Joy Wang was yesterday still reeling after being being robbed at knifepoint for the second time in 12 months.

Although the 22-year-old said she had been the victim of another robbery about the same time last year, this time her 16-month-old daughter had been in the store just seconds before it was raided by an armed man.

"He came toward me with a knife and pointed it to me.

"I was on my own but my baby was in the shop just before.

"I had just taken her into the back room.

"It could have been quite bad if my baby was still in the shop."

The incident occurred about 3pm on Saturday.

Closed circuit television pictures show a masked man wearing black shoes, baggy black jogging bottoms with a double white stripe, and a black hoodie with white piping entering the Thames St store holding a bronze-coloured screwdriver or knife.

Ms Wang said the man made off with about 500 cigarettes.

She described the experience as "sad and scary".

The officer in charge of the case was unavailable for comment yesterday but it is understood police have arrested two people in connection with the alleged robbery.
