Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said the incident occurred about noon on a rural property in Whiterocks Rd, between Oamaru and Weston. Ambulance, police and the Fire Service attended, along with Department of Labour serious crash investigators.
"We are building a picture of what happened but we need to speak with the people who were there at the time," Sgt Woodbridge said.
The boy remained in a critical condition early this afternoon in Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit.
Investigations are continuing.
