Percy exhibition near end

Oamaru residents have only a few days left to sample what is proving to be the Forrester Art Gallery's best-received exhibition in recent times.

''The Imaginative Life and Times of Graham Percy'', which explores the works of New Zealand children's book illustrator Graham Percy, opened on August 17, and gallery director Warwick Smith said the touring exhibition was due to leave for Nelson after its final day next Wednesday.

Mr Smith said the two-floor exhibition, which included a repeat showing of the full-length animated movie Hugo the Hippo that featured the voice of Marie Osmond and was illustrated by Percy, was an ''important'' exhibition.

The Taranaki-born artist, who died in 2008, also created pictures for the Alice in Wonderland story book and designed stamps for the Royal Mail, but Mr Smith said although he was well recognised in the United Kingdom, Percy was little known in New Zealand.

''It's putting to rights an artist that deserves to be more widely appreciated in his native country.''
