Pigs raise a stink in Hampden

Pig carcasses dumped over a bank in Newcastle St, Hampden, last week were removed at the weekend after neighbours complained about the smell.

Hilda Tisdall said she complained to the Waitaki District Council last Friday about the dead pigs.

The animals were still there when the Otago Daily Times visited the site on Saturday morning but by the afternoon they had been removed.

Mrs Tisdall said she was concerned by the increased amount of waste being dumped on the site.

A "no tipping" sign had been thrown away, she said.

The dead pigs had been removed by the time a council staff member visited the dump site on Saturday afternoon, manager of regulatory services, Paul Arnold said.

The council was keen to work with local residents to eliminate illegal rubbish dumping, he said.

The Hampden rubbish transfer station, which the council planned to close last year, has remained open while the council reconsiders its solid waste disposal plans.

The former Hampden tip, between Newcastle St and Hampden beach, has been opened up by heavy seas and rubbish from the former tip is lying on the beach.
