The salmon are running again this year in the Waikakahi Stream in a fundraiser that has become an annual event for Glenavy.
The inaugural ''Salmon Run'' was held last year when the Glenavy School benefited from the sale of about 500 individually numbered plastic orange fish released into the stream which joins the Waitaki River from the north, just before the State Highway 1 bridge.
It is organised by Glenavy farmer Chris Paul, who wanted something unique to reflectthe area's association with Waitaki River salmon.
Each entry costs $5, with all proceeds going to the Glenavy Volunteer Fire Brigade towards the purchase of a St John first response kit.
This year's event will start at 10am on March 28 when the 500 fish will be released into the stream, floating about 1km downstream to the finish line where they will be collected and the finishing order logged.
Prizes and a barbecue will be at the Glenavy rest area next to the Waitaki bridge.
First to finish wins $500, but there is also a large number of spots prizes drawn.
