Power points proposed for Waimate camping reserves around the Waitaki lakes have not made everyone happy campers.
More than half who returned a survey from the Waimate District Council about the proposal oppose power points and want the camping areas to remain as they are.
About 500 survey forms were distributed to campers on the north sides of Lakes Waitaki and Aviemore after the council had included $53,000 in this year's annual plan and another $55,000 next year to install a power supply at Waitaki lakes camping areas.
However, after analysing 246 survey forms returned, the council found 147 did not agree with power points, because they enjoyed the areas as they were.
While 56 agreed with power points on a user-pays basis only, another 43 said they would use them if available.
The camp sites, which attract thousands of campers each year over Christmas, have only basic facilities. These include rubbish receptacles and collection, water, toilets and effluent-wastewater dump stations.
The issue will be discussed by the council on May 6.
