River bridge fatality

Police have not yet released the name of a man who died after being struck by a car on the Waitaki River bridge near Glenavy on Thursday night.

The man, who was from Glenavy, had no identification on him.

He was identified yesterday and police were in the process of notifying next of kin yesterday afternoon.

The man was on the north side of the bridge when he was hit by a car travelling north about 8.15pm.

The road was closed until 10pm and a detour was in place, with traffic having to travel through Kurow.

Yesterday, Sergeant Mike van der Heyden, of Waimate, said police had received calls from three other motorists who had seen the man on the bridge and had narrowly missed hitting him.

The man was wearing dark clothing and it was drizzling at the time of the incident.

The driver of the car, who was from North Otago, was "very distraught".

He had been interviewed by police, but Sgt van der Heyden would not yet give details of what he had told police.
