Lee Stream farmer Boyd Tisdall and his dog Lou have won the New Zealand straight hunt dog trial title for the second time.

Mr Tisdall won the event at the South Island and New Zealand dog trial championships in Blenheim yesterday, while John Tweed from Lawrence and Mark won the zig-zag hunt.

Mr Tisdall and 8-year-old Lou scored 98.5 out of 100 in the first run, which meant they were placed fourth in the South Island championships, and then 99 in the run-off for the New Zealand title.

They previously won the title at Taumarunui in 2005.

Lou was bought as a pup from Waikaia farmer Matt McKee and trained by Mr Tisdall.

Her son, Cash, was fifth in the straight hunt at the North Island championships in Wanganui this year.

Mr Tisdall, who is in his 30s, began dog trialling 13 years ago but started to take the sport seriously about eight years ago.

Mr Tweed and Mark scored 98.2 in their first zig-zag hunt run, which gave them a fourth placing in the South Island championship, and 98 in their second run.

Last night, Mr Tweed's wife, Debbie, said she was "very thrilled for him".

Mr Tweed (50), who has been trialling since he was a teenager, bred 8-year-old Mark.

It was his first New Zealand title.

Mark, who was the top huntaway in Otago in 2006-07, was an "old campaigner" who had timed his run, Mrs Tweed said.

Last year, Mark was on the leaderboard at the national championships for four days before coming off.

James Crutchley and Hugh (Ranfurly) were sixth in the NZ zig-zag hunt, while Robert Calder and Hood (Omakau) and Graeme Dickie and Don (Lawrence) were fifth and seventh respectively in the straight hunt.

Mr Dickie won the South Island title with a score of 99.25, but scored only 68 in his second run.

Dansey Pass triallist Neville Hore and Vic Jr remain on the leaderboard in the short head and yard.
