Seven applications have been received for the role of rector at Waitaki Boys' High School.
Applications for the top job closed on Monday and school commissioner Nicola Hornsey confirmed yesterday she had received seven, which would now be considered in consultation with a recruitment panel.
"Referee and background checks will be conducted and any selected candidates will then be invited to attend interviews in the new year,'' she said.
The advertisement sought a principal who would be "a good role model for the boys of Waitaki Boys' High School and lead by example, foster a culture of excellence and participation for all boys in all aspects of school life, with a particular focus on academic achievement, ... [and] have recent New Zealand experience as a secondary school principal''.
Ms Hornsey has appointed former Otago Boys' High School rector Clive Rennie as temporary head for the first term of 2016, until a permanent rector can be appointed.
She hoped the new rector would able to start by term two next year.
Paul Jackson is stepping down at the end of the 2015 school year after four years at the helm of WBHS.
His departure announcement in October came after a 12.5% drop in enrolments was predicted at the school next year, which will result in cuts to teaching jobs and funding.
Teacher cuts had been addressed, Ms Hornsey said, as three staff had voluntarily elected to have their jobs disestablished.
She did not want to confirm what those jobs were because that would identify staff.
