This Strawberry Fare founder’s last

Getting the fruit ready in time for today’s  Strawberry Fare has been a big mission at Butler’s Berry Farm, near Waimate.

But this year, the weather gods have played ball:  recent sunshine following a long period of rain has ensured the fruit is nice and juicy.

This year’s event, the 32nd, is the last one for the woman who founded it, Jackie Butler, the co-owner of Butler’s Berry Farm. After today, she will no longer be involved.

Mrs Butler was chairwoman of the Waimate Art Group, which had been seeking a location for an outdoor exhibition. She suggested a Strawberry Fare at the berry farm,  which would also celebrate the centenary of strawberries being planted in the district.

The fare was held at the Butlers’ roadside fruit stall for the first few years, then moved into Waimate’s Seddon Square in 1989. Stalls were set up under the trees. It has since spread to fill both the square and neighbouring Boland Park, attracting thousands of visitors.

Organising committee chairwoman Joy McIvor said there were 275 stalls  this year, with more on a waiting list.

A Christmas parade would arrive at 11am, led by the pipe band and followed by youth groups and classic cars. A crowd of 12,000 to 14,000 was expected, Mrs McIvor said.

The Strawberry Fare runs from 10.30am to 4pm, with free entry.
