Holographic fire-breathing dragons and lasers will bring Oamaru's Victorian precinct alive in spectacular style next month during the 2015 Fire and Steam festival.

On May 29, the fire, steam, sound and lighting festival, formerly known as Oamaru on Fire, will be held in the Harbour St area.

Organising committee member Derek Golding, of Golding Arts, is responsible for developing holographic art installations and the various lighting projections.

He has been working on the show, organised by Tourism Waitaki and the Criterion Hotel, for the past month and is dedicating all of May to the project.

''Nobody has done anything like this [before] with the holographic film as an art installation, especially of this size,'' Mr Golding said.

He has developed mythical creatures, including fire-breathing dragons, and fire entities using Hollywood-standard rendering software.

Holographic film has been applied to windows of the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust building, the Loft gallery and the Loan and Merc building to bring the creations to life.

Mr Golding said he loved the technical challenge of the project and was excited about the future possibilities for the area.

''The [holographic] film will stay there [on the windows] so it becomes a resource for the district, for Harbour St,'' he said.

Featuring local artists and performers, Fire and Steam 2015 will take place in the Victorian precinct on May 29, from 6.30pm to 9pm.

The event will close with a mass release of fire lanterns.
