Three people were taken to Oamaru Hospital after a crash on State Highway 1, north of Oamaru, on Saturday morning.
The 22-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, crossed the centre line, left the road and hit a steel gate, Senior Constable Bruce Dow said.
None of the occupants were seriously injured.
The driver had a blood sample taken from him, Snr Const Dow said.
Three people were processed for drink-driving in North Otago at the weekend.
One of them, a 19-year-old, was also charged with operating a vehicle causing it to undergo a sustained loss of traction after police received "multiple" complaints about his driving.
