Emergency services attended a truck fire in Thames St, Oamaru, yesterday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two crews attended the fire, near the intersection with Nen St, about 5.50pm. A third crew was stood down.

Crews put out the blaze with water.

Initially, reports were received of an explosion caused by a tyre bursting.

A nearby resident heard a loud bang from inside her house and saw billowing black smoke as two people tried to fight the blaze with fire extinguishers.

The truck appeared to be carrying rubber pipes, she said.
