Warning about caravan sale scam

Caravan enthusiasts in North Otago are being warned to beware of cut price offers for top of the range caravans.

Community Constable Bruce Dow, of Oamaru, issued the warning after a Waikato couple lost $26,000 in a Jayco caravan scam recently.

The caravan was advertised for $16,900 as an urgent sale. It normally retails for around $45,000.

After being alerted by a friend, Snr Const Dow was involved in an investigation in 2013 into an advertisement offering a 2006 Jayco Sterling caravan for sale for $14,000. Snr Const Dow said if a deal seemed too good to be true, it was probably a scam.

''These are the things you need to ask to try and catch these people: current registration and expiry date, expiry date of the warrant, expiry date of the electric warrant,'' he said.

''And if you can't get to see it [the caravan], there's something wrong.''

He advised people not to transfer money for goods they had not seen.
