Port Chalmers School pupils got to display giant African masks they made at a music stop in Chalmers Pl during the 14th annual PORTable Art Parade through the port town yesterday.

Under the guidance of Dunedin artists David and Kate Grace, whose company, Songbong, promotes African and Brazilian music and dance, every pupil had been involved in the past week in making the masks, some about 3m tall, and learning to play the school's 40 drums for the parade.

The parade was followed by the town's annual kite festival at Watson Park, although the lack of wind was not what the organisers wished.
