14-year-old girl driver involved in accident

A 14-year-old girl driver has been referred by police to Youth Aid after a car crash near Wanaka on Saturday night.

The girl was behind the wheel as a sober driver for two of her teenage friends - a 15-year old Wanaka girl and a 17-year-old Queenstown male.

Constable Phil Vink said the group were driving on State Highway 6 from Albert Town and the driver had made a right turn into the path of an oncoming car.

Driving conditions at the time were described as shocking, with heavy rain falling at the time of the accident, Const Vink said.

"Their car got T-boned," he said.

The 15-year-old female front seat passenger was taken by ambulance to Dunstan Hospital for treatment to suspected shoulder and rib injuries.

The male driver of the other car suffered whiplash and neck injuries.

A third vehicle parked at the intersection was also hit in the collision, Const Vink said.

Emergency services spent about an hour and a-half at the accident scene.

• Two young women processed for drink-driving in Wanaka on Friday night is a worrying statistic for local police.

The Alexandra-based Central Otago Rural Drink Driving unit visited Wanaka on Friday night and spent Saturday night in Arrowtown.

Constable Phil Vink said the young age of the women was "a bit of a worry".

A police checkpoint caught the three women, aged 16, 18, and 29, driving over the limit.

A 26-year-old Arrowtown man recorded an excess breath-alcohol reading, near Queenstown, on Saturday night, a police spokeswoman said.

The four people are scheduled to appear in the Queenstown District Court this week, to face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
