$300m resort gets go-ahead

Work will start next year on a $300 million Gibbston golf resort after commissioners gave the project the go-ahead.

Developer Gibbston Valley Station Ltd has been granted resource consent to build an 18-hole golf course, health spa, and accommodation.

Managing director Greg Hunt told the Southland Times the recession would not impact the project.

"We have the option of financing it ourselves or going out to the market. Our point of difference to others is that we're in charge of our own destiny."

Construction is expected to take six years and employ 100 workers at any one time.
