A war of words has erupted over Queenstown's planned eastern access road.
The design is out to tender for the Frankton road, which is expected to significantly relieve congestion, taking motorists from State Highway 6 past the airport to Remarkables Park.
But Remarkables Park director Alastair Porter is concerned delays might be a Queenstown Lakes District Council tactic to hold up his company's planned conference centre.
The council has its own convention centre plan.
''We're at a loss to understand why they won't build that road,'' Mr Porter said.
Almost $9 million was earmarked for the road in the council's last annual plan, but its latest long-term plan spreads the now $10.3 million budget over several years.
Council chief executive Adam Feeley said there had never been an attempt to stall the road or a convention centre at Frankton.
''It is disingenuous of Mr Porter to complain of delays at Frankton when his litigation delayed settlement of plan change 19 for many years when all other parties, including the council, were willing to settle.''
Queenstown Airport's latest annual report states the company agreed with a ''neighbouring developer'' to pay for the construction of the eastern access road ''if either the company or the developer trigger the development''.
