Let's get ready to rumble! The Lakes Districts' skifields were yesterday celebrating the first serious snowfall of the year, with weather forecasters already talking about more to come.
This augurs well for the 2008 American Express Queenstown Winter Festival, which begins in the resort on June 27.
Coronet Peak ski area manager Hamish McCrostie said 10cm of snow blanketed the mountain overnight on Wednesday and continued to fall yesterday.
While snowmaking was scheduled to begin next week following the testing of the new system, it was "looking good", Mr McCrostie said.
At the Remarkables, spirits were high, with the heavy clouds dropping 15cm of snow.
The Cardrona field was well coated with 25cm and operators were excited about the prospect of using the high-speed, detachable Captain's Chairlift for the first time.
Treble Cone matched the Cardrona measurement of 25cm.
Pisa Range skifield Snow Park was also coated in snow and with low temperatures, snow-making guns had started, spokeswoman Claire Jackson said.
