After six losses, albeit two very narrow ones, the Wakatipu Wild women’s ice hockey team put on two stellar performances in Dunedin last weekend.
They first beat Dunedin Thunder 3-2 in overtime, captain Aoife Orr slotting the decider after an assist by Kelli Burstein.
Then they lost 2-1, but only after an extraordinary post-overtime 15-shot shootout.
Both goalies, Wild’s Jordan Wichman and Thunder’s Lucy Thomas, were exceptional, Wild coach Trevor Lawrence says — 29 saves were made before ex-Wild player, Thunder’s Abbey Heale, found the net.
Lawrence says "our momentum is certainly growing, we’re getting better week on week".
He notes they made good comebacks in both games.
In a fast turnaround, they are now hosting the Thunder at the Queenstown Ice Arena this weekend — puck drop is 7pm both tomorrow and on Saturday.
