Autumn days

Morning sunlight brightens the spire of St Peter's Church on Monday with a fresh overnight dusting of snow on Cecil Peak behind.

Fine dry weather during the day and chilly temperatures at night were forecast to continue in Queenstown over the weekend, MetService meteorologist Daniel Corbett, of Wellington, said yesterday.

"Beautiful in the day, 18degC or 19degC, Saturday, Sunday. The high hangs on through the week and it may hang on through to Tuesday or Wednesday.

"There is a development of a low coming out of the Tasman and maybe some other moisture coming in from further north."

Asked if another late arrival of snow in Queenstown could be expected this winter, Mr Corbett said the big player from the summer would be exiting stage left.

"La Nina has had quite an influence on the weather flow across New Zealand and is slowly fading away.

"The westerlies will have a bit of grunt, then we'll have those typical cool blasts, so it's very difficult to say when snow will actually start falling, but those active troughs we've already seen will continue as you go through autumn."
