Camper gas explosion cause unknown

Fire investigators are still trying to work out what caused a gas explosion inside a camper van at Lake Hayes which seriously injured two overseas tourists.

The two Swiss women, aged 60 and 72, were taken to Lakes District Hospital in Frankton then airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with burns to their faces, hands and feet after the incident about 7pm on Monday.

Central-North Otago fire risk management officer Stuart Ide said fire investigators and government agency Energy Safe were looking into the cause of the explosion.

"The explosion was caused by gas from a gas cooker inside the camper van.

"We're still investigating as to why that happened.''

Mr Ide said investigators were looking at all possibilities and keeping an open mind but they had more questions than answers at this point.

The camper van was a private vehicle, Mr Ide said.

The condition of the two women was not known last night, Mr Ide said.

He had spoken to one yesterday morning but had not received any updates since then.
