Car parks petition fails to sway board

A petition has failed to convince the Wanaka Community Board it should reverse its decision last month to introduce more time-restricted parking in the town centre.

The petition, signed by 37 people from Wanaka, Albert Town, Lake Hawea and Luggate, raised concerns about the loss of unrestricted parking for employees of town centre businesses.

The areas affected by the proposal are Dungarvon St (between Ardmore St and Brownston St) and lakefront car park 2.

A report by transportation planning manager Denis Mander said the changes would affect about 35 car parkers.

Although the loss of unrestricted parking would increase pressure on the remaining areas of unrestricted parking and increase the spread of commuter parking into nearby streets, the change to time-restricted parking was made to increase turnover in areas of high demand, Mr Mander said.

Deputy board chairman Ken Copland said after the meeting he blamed the lack of car parks on developers and inadequate zone rules for the central business district.

"The real problem lies with the council and the property developers . . . I think the community is badly served and employees miss out," Mr Copland said.
