A Pak 'N Save supermarket and fuel station proposed for Queenstown's Shotover Park development could create up to 80 jobs within the complex alone.
Supermarket operator Foodstuffs last month lodged a resource consent application with Lakes Environmental for the proposed multimillion-dollar Frankton Flats facility.
The complex would have a combined floor area of 6603sqm.
The location of the supermarket and garage within Shotover Park's subdivision adjacent to State Highway 6 is yet to be finalised, but the development is expected to be accessed from the proposed Eastern Access road and Glenda Rd extensions, with allowances for bus stops.
Both the supermarket and fuel station would operate from 7am until midnight seven days a week.
Foodstuffs property development manager Roger Davidson said based on customer surveys and the predicted population increase in the Wakatipu Basin, there was a need for a discount supermarket such as Pak'n Save.
"There's a demand for lower grocery prices and we are pleased to be able to bring that to the community of Queenstown."
In addition to the jobs within the complex, it would generate construction industry jobs as well as jobs outside the supermarket for suppliers once operational.
The resource consent application said the store would have a "high-quality landscape frontage" to the proposed Eastern Access Rd, which was envisaged to help focus direct views along the road towards the Remarkables Range.
Proposed landscaping includes liquidambar trees in the 365-space car park, Italian alders, mountain beech trees and other plantings.
