Wanaka residents living on Riverbank Rd have set up a series of earth blockades in a bid to combat rubbish-dumpers and illegal campers from using a frequently-visited spot at the river.
A request from Riverbank Rd resident Jo Dippie to the Wanaka Community Board for extra signs in the area was acted on yesterday by Queenstown Lakes District Council waste manager Stefan Borowy.
Ms Dippie said a group of residents had set up barricades to block access to a secluded site along the river.
More needed to be done to get the message through to messy freedom campers and rubbish-dumpers to stay away, she said.
Mr Borowy told community board members council signs would be placed at accessways leading along the shingle banks of the Cardrona River from near the Ballantyne Rd bridge.
The council aimed to have the signs in place within two weeks, he said.
Ms Dippie said after the meeting barricades had been in place at one site for about a year.
Locals were fed-up with the mess left by freedom campers and rubbish being dumped in the area.
Wanaka Community Board chairman Lyal Cocks said he understood the frustration felt by residents and hoped the new signs would discourage those who were using such areas inappropriately.
Action taken by the Hawea Community Association to block access from State Highway 6 to three lakeside reserves at Lake Hawea has helped focus attention on freedom campers and the mess they can leave behind.
