Drink-driving 'problem' in Wanaka

A "disappointing" rise in the number of arrests for drink-driving has been logged in Wanaka following a campaign targeting back routes, police say.

Wanaka sub-area commander Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said the number of drink-drivers arrested during a publicised campaign, which began six weeks ago, was problematic.

Police had arrested nine males and one female during the ongoing campaign, compared with only one drink-driving arrest during the "busy" summer months of January and February.

Police had run a series of radio advertising messages to try to get their message across.

The "comparatively high number of arrests" and the recorded levels of intoxication were disappointing.

"It goes to show when you put a focus [on drink-driving] there is a real problem out there," he said.

The figures were "not a good sign", as at-risk drivers continued to ignore warnings.
