The Wakatipu Aero Club may not have found a new home yet but its building has.

Its 45-year-old clubhouse in Lucas Pl, Frankton, was lowered on to a truck yesterday in preparation for removal overnight.

The club's lease of the site expired last week after the Queenstown Airport Corporation refused to renew it.

Its commercial arm, Air Wakatipu, has relocated to a building on nearby Tex Smith Lane, but its members and flying school remain homeless.

However, a gesture by pilot and Civil Construction owner Paul Horrell means the building will have a second life.

Mr Horrell said he knew the club was facing financial constraints, and had offered to demolish the building at no cost.

But after his company won a contract at the nearby Lakes Edge development at Kawarau Falls, he decided to relocate the building there for use as a site office.

''We're going to keep it alive instead of taking it to the dump.''

Club president Adrian Snow said the removal of the building - constructed by members in 1970 using timber milled on the Crown Range - was the ''end of an era''.
