More than 30 figure skaters from Gore to Auckland contested the Queenstown Invitational ice figure skating competition at the weekend.

Hosted by the Queenstown Ice Skating Club at the Ice Arena yesterday, the competition doubled as the club's championships, as well as offering competitors the opportunity to qualify for the national championships in Auckland next month.

Club treasurer Jamie Adams Campbell said the dozen club members contesting the event had been training four days a week since April for the competition season, which continues until October.

The next major competition is the South Island championships in Dunedin, starting on Friday.

Competitors were judged on five elements including performance, ability and technical moves. Categories are determined by age, ranging from development one through to adult interpretive gold elite.

Elite category winners

Adult Gold 1 Ladies: Kelly Hoebergen (Gore).

Junior Ladies: Rebecca Lau (Christchurch).

Novice Ladies: Kaitlin Chamberlain (Dunedin).

Intermediate Men: Rohan Kinraid (Dunedin).

Intermediate Ladies: Sara Reynolds (Auckland).
