The Stroke Foundation of New Zealand will offer free blood-pressure tests to the public outside Wakatipu New World on Saturday, as part of its fourth national blood-pressure awareness campaign.

The foundation and campaign partners St John, Foodstuffs and Rotary aimed to give information to shoppers about high blood pressure and other risk factors for stroke, Otago region field officer Judith Hyslop, of Dunedin, said.

"The 2011 campaign was very successful, with around 14,000 people having their blood pressure checked and taking away blood-pressure information.

"This year the campaign aims to operate at least 150 blood-pressure sites.

"Most of these will be in Foodstuffs supermarkets [and] other sites may include such venues as malls, hospital foyers, market places, health centres, marae health clinics and other appropriate sites.

"Some primary health organisations are setting up displays in their clinics."

The campaign urged everyone to know what their blood pressure should be, have their blood pressure checked regularly and take action to help control blood pressure.

The free tests will be offered from 10am to 2pm.

Information about blood pressure and other risk factors for stroke will be provided during the check.

People with raised blood pressure will be referred to their doctors for medical advice or treatment.

Stroke is the third largest killer in New Zealand and a major cause of disability in the country.
