Ex-Black Cap captains Brendon McCullum and Stephen Fleming are likely to be golfing this Friday instead of attending cricket great Martin Crowe's funeral.

Crowe died last Thursday after a long battle with lymphoma and a service will be held in Auckland.

Speaking to media at The Hills golf course this afternoon, Fleming says they want to honour their commitment to play the ANZ Celebrity Challenge at the New Zealand Golf Open.

Fleming remembers Crowe as a lover of Queenstown and golf and hopes that they can "celebrate it that way''.

They are looking at how best to pay tribute to "a great New Zealander and a wonderful cricket player''.

Five other cricketers are expected to miss the funeral due to the clash - former New Zealand players Simon Doull and Mark Richardson, ex-Australian captains Ricky Ponting and Allan Border, and England's Sir Ian Botham.

Tournament organisers are working on a way in which Crowe can be honoured publicly, with the cricketers in attendance, during the NZ Open.
