Two years of hard labour has resulted in a book which details every known climb in the Queenstown area - all 852 routes.

Co-author Guillaume Charton said the intensive process of collecting photos and putting the information on to paper was all for a good cause, with proceeds from the book going back into the Queenstown climbing community for conservation work, youth development and maintaining access.

''It's very exhaustive in terms of climbs,'' Mr Charton said.

He said the Queenstown area is the fastest developing region in New Zealand for climbing and ''this guidebook is trying to capture that''.

''Climbing is growing so fast in Queenstown.''

Climbing in New Zealand was getting more and more centralised, he said, and with 100 members the Queenstown club was trying to take care of local issues.

Instead of choosing his favourite climb, he detailed what a climbing weekend in Queenstown would involve: ''Friday would be Chinaman's Bluff to climb Ravages of Time - it's a very special climb because you climb above the native forest of the Dart Valley.

"Then I would zoom to the Remarkables to climb DB Eh! above Lake Alta.

"And on Sunday I would celebrate my weekend by climbing the Big Day Out in South Wye.''

Each of the climbs is at least 200m.

The book includes details about access for each climb and the flora and fauna of the area.

The long awaited book, essentially a climber's bible, was officially launched on Saturday.

• The book retails for $49 and is available from selected outdoor shops. Queenstown Rock, Ice and Mountains is co-authored by Guillaume Charton and Mike Dunn, and edited by Melanie Heather.
