With 15 weeks at the top of the New Zealand Top 50 music charts, South Auckland hip-hop trio Smashproof have shown they are capable of smashing records.

They played in Queenstown last night as part of their nationwide tour - which was booked months before the members had any idea how successful their single, Brother, would be.

It broke a long-standing record in April by surpassing the 1986 America's Cup theme song Sailing Away, by All Of Us, which spent nine consecutive weeks at No 1.

But the success did not happen overnight and talking to the Otago Daily Times, with another five weeks at the top, the self-described "homies" from South Auckland - Deach, Tyree and Young Sid - seemed still slightly surprised by the reaction.

"The Smashproof album [The Weekend] has been in the making since 2006," Tyree said.

"We didn't expect the response to Brother.

Being at the top of the charts at the beginning of New Zealand music month is also a source of pride.

"Another thing is we're on top of the whole of music in New Zealand . . . not just hip-hop," They have also been "blown away" by their following - from young children to grandparents.

"A lot of people who don't [usually] listen to hip-hop appreciate what we are doing," Tyree said.

But they are also aware a lot of people will try to latch on to their newfound success.

"We just hang out with the people who were there from the start," Deach said. Smashproof formed five years years ago in South Auckland.

Plans include a possible tour of Australia in August and although their dream is to make it in the United States, they are focusing on making more good music at home.

Their message to the younger generations of New Zealand hip-hop artists - "or sports stars or whatever" - is simple.

"Knowledge is power - stay in school and just be real."
