Last week, the Queenstown District Court sat in chambers in his memory.
Queenstown lawyer Dale Lloyd said last week Mr Newell was a ''real stalwart'' for representing people and worked extensively as a duty solicitor in the Queenstown District Court.
The lawyer also worked in Dunedin and Invercargill.
New Zealand Law Society Otago branch president David Robinson, of Dunedin, described Mr Newell as a larger-than-life character respected by peers and by the court as a highly capable advocate.
''He was very down to earth - that voice of his was very compelling when he was doing an address to a jury.''
