Aspiring storytellers will have the opportunity to see their work performed by Remarkable Theatre by entering the new "Pint-Sized Plays" short playwriting competition.

Entries are being taken until November 30 for original plays of five to 10 minutes' duration, which can be performed in a pub by up to three actors or actresses, playing as many characters as required. Basic props would be used.

Competition organiser and entertainer David Cantwell, of Arrowtown, said a short-list of six scripts would be produced by the theatre in a venue to be confirmed at the end of March.

The audience will judge the "most interesting, funny, dramatic, or outrageous play" as their favourite on the night, Mr Cantwell said.

"The prize will be the glory of being the first Pint-Sized Play winner," he said.

"It's part of our effort to foster interest in live theatre and playwriting and get people away from their tellies. We sure hope that it works."

Playwrights are encouraged to email davidcantwell@xtra.co.nz for more information, advice and help, plus forms, and to submit plays. A fee of $10 is to be paid per entry to help cover costs.
