It was a relatively quiet day yesterday for the Queenstown Winter Festival, but it allowed visitors to enjoy what the 10-day celebrations are all about - winter snow sports.

Festival director Simon Green said preparation for coming attractions kept contractors and volunteers busy yesterday. Temporary protective tiles were lifted from Earnslaw Park grass to make way for the Downtown Day, including the drag race, tomorrow.

A core group of 40 to 50 dancers dazzled for hours in retro sportswear on the park for "zumba mania" to encourage health and fitness.

The Queenstown Memorial Hall was transformed for the sold-out Ladies Lifestyle Challenge showcase last night. About 360 spectators celebrated the achievements of a dozen Wakatipu women after their 12-week lifestyle makeover.

Queenstown resident Megan Ide was awarded "most dedicated" and given a prize package, while Rachael Long, of Queenstown, and Jennifer Jodi Welland, of Wanaka, both received best attitude" awards.

Meanwhile, snow sports fans at Coronet Peak saw Australian reality TV host Lara Bingle and New Zealand model and professional snowboarder Hayley Holt hit the slopes for Ms Bingle's new reality television show.

Ms Bingle is scheduled to return home to Sydney today.

Her entourage said she enjoyed her time in the Wakatipu filming for Air New Zealand.

The airline's campaign is aimed at enticing "Kiwi sceptics" from across the Tasman and make them fall in love with the country and its offerings.
