Man remanded on burglary charges

A man allegedly involved in several burglaries with another man on a road trip through South Westland appeared in the Queenstown District Court yesterday.

The 36-year-old man was remanded in custody by a registrar after he was arrested in Wanaka on Monday evening.

The man and a 28-year-old Nelson man were arrested after a string of burglaries in Franz Josef on Monday morning.

Constable Paul Gurney, of Franz Josef, said the pair allegedly broke into a hotel, a main tourism operator's office, and a car, early on Monday.

They allegedly stole $1500 in cash, 600 packets of cigarettes, and a large suitcase of clothes.

Haast residents notified police after becoming suspicious after two men paid for purchases with $1 and $2 coins, Const Gurney said.

Haast police arrested the other man at Jackson's Bay on Monday afternoon.

The pair would stand trial on the burglary charges in the Greymouth District Court in next month, he said.
