The annual Winter Festival dodgeball tournament took centre stage in Earnslaw Park on Friday, with some colourful costumes and personalities on display in what has become a popular and hotly contested tournament.

Questionable and outlandish team names were only part of the fun as the participants showed off impressive ball skills to keep the crowd entertained.

Twenty-seven teams, some from as far away as Dunedin, made up the field, all trying to wipe out their opponents.

Team "Those Meddling Kids" was crowned champion after the sweaty battle, with its members dressed up as a collection of Scooby Doo characters.

The team consisted of James Morris-Williamson, Luke Sullivan, Jack Greasly and Anthony Oorshot.

Unofficial face of the Winter Festival Mark Wilson said it was a very hotly contested championship with two great teams battling it out in the final.

"Those Meddling Kids had been meddling with the teams all day and deserved the win," he said.
