The dumping of fish carcasses at a popular Wanaka lakeside reserve has angered Queenstown Lakes district harbourmaster Marty Black, who is calling for the public's help to find the culprits.

Mr Black said up to 30 filleted blue cod carcasses were dumped at the ski lane at Eely Point on Thursday.

"It's a really well-used area," he said.

"You just wonder at the mentality of some people."

Mr Black called for the public's help in identifying those responsible, who could face a fine of about $500 for dumping offensive material.

"Someone might come out of the woodwork."

He said the people who had left the blue cod remains at Eely Point should have instead considered taking them home to use as fish manure.

"They're actually very good for gardens."
