Fifty public rubbish bins in Wanaka and Arrowtown are to be replaced at a cost of $275,000.
The existing bins are being replaced by the Queenstown Lakes District Council with a Ministry of Education grant.
The grant covers the cost of 50 new 50 litre bins at a cost of $2,500 each, and ongoing operational costs of up to $3000 each during the next three years.
QLDC waste manager Stefan Borowy said the new bins would provide separated streams for recyclable and non-recyclable rubbish and were quadruple the size of the existing bins.
