An authority on the works of painter Colin McCahon will talk about the "responses to nature" and the themes shared by McCahon and Port Chalmers artist Russell Moses in Arrowtown tomorrow night.

Natalie Poland, curator of pictorial collections, Hocken Library, at the University of Otago, will deliver her lecture "Monumental Landshapes", in Dorothy Browns cinema at 7pm.

The exhibition "Necessary Reflections: A Response to Colin McCahon, New Works by Russell Moses", opens at the neighbouring Nadene Milne Gallery at 8pm.

Five large pieces by Moses form the exhibition, along with a selection of smaller framed works on paper. Moses, a professional artist for more than 30 years, has exhibited in New Zealand and internationally since 1980.

The cost for the lecture is $8.

To reserve seats, telephone Dorothy Browns cinema.

• "Necessary Reflections" runs until December 4.
