Parts of Queenstown and Arrowtown experienced a major power outage this afternoon after a failed circuit breaker caused a transformer in Delta's Queenstown substation to catch on fire.
The fire happened at 2.43pm, with two Queenstown Fire Brigade engines attending the nearby substation for about an hour and a half.
Firefighters monitored the situation until Delta technicians had rendered the system safe and attempted to extinguish the fire using dry powder and carbon dioxide powder, and when that failed used water to put it out.
An update released by the Queenstown Lakes District Council Twitter feed said Delta expected to have power restored by now.
