Mr Christie will next month meet the regional chief executives at New Zealand's chamber of commerce board.
The Wanaka Chamber of Commerce is pushing to host the 2011 national conference.
Auckland has put in a competing bid.
Mr Christie said next month's meeting would be the start of debate about where the 2011 national conference will be held.
"I'm fully supportive of Wanaka and am definitely in behind their bid," he told the Otago Daily Times this week.
Hosting the national conference would be a "big undertaking" but one the Wanaka chamber was "more than capable of".
Shifting the national conference around different locations was a positive practice and lent strength to the regional chambers that hosted it, he said.
